Harsh winter weather can be taxing on your vehicle, and let’s be honest, who really wants to get stranded in the cold with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs? Peace of mind is easy to achieve. All you need to do is invest a little time and follow these preventative steps to “winterizing” your vehicle.

Check your Antifreeze:

Antifreeze, otherwise known as coolant, is the liquid found in your radiator that draws heat away from your engine. Your car contains will typically contain a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full, you’re using the correct type of coolant for your vehicle and that and the mixture is close to 50/50.

Check your windshield wipers & windshield wiper fluid

Winter weather in Metro Vancouver usually means rain and lots of it. However, we do sometimes see snowfall and it is important that your wipers are in top shape to handle the snow, slush, and salt that end up on your windshield. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your washer fluid is full to deal with all that additional gunk on your windshield.

Inspect your Tires

Believe it or not, temperature drops can lead to decreased pressure in your tires. Check your tire pressure and fill them if they are low. Low tire pressure will decrease your gas mileage and tire performance. The last thing you want to do is cheap out on tires during winter weather. If your tread is low… BUY NEW TIRES. If you are looking to make a trip out north or head to Whistler for the weekend you’ll need to install winter tires. Many highways in British Columbia require you to use snow tires between the months of October and April.
